Appearances

Bernice and animals

Hopefully we aren’t gentle and kind just so we look good to others. Merely keeping up appearances never gets us very far, anyway. But there is some wisdom to "clothing ourselves in kindness" — or, to use Bernice’s metaphor, "sprinkling ourselves with birdseed." To develop habits of gentleness and kindness, we may need to start by pretending to be better than we are. But if we keep it up, often we actually become the person we pretended to be.

PRAYER: Gentle and loving God, this week help me to be aware of how I treat others. I know I always can do better. Please give me a sprinkling of your compassion to wear on the outside, and may it serve the needs of those around me while sinking deep into my heart.
